What a beaut! For this shot we used my sister's point and shoot (a Nikon Coolpix I think) since I had left my camera battery at home (doh). Not too shabby! It was my first experience photographing nudes and I gained so much respect for the models and their work during the shoots. Here's a recap of what I've been up to this month!</span></div><ul><li><span class="Apple-style-span">I shot two more series of Occupy Wall St portraits for NY Observer (<a href="http://www.observer.com/2011/10/30-portraits-from-occupy-wall-street-the-outsiders/">one</a>, <a href="http://www.observer.com/2011/11/portraits-from-occupy-wall-street-tent-city-slideshow/">two</a>) before Bloomberg cleared out the tents. Plus three photos from the first group are in this month's <a href="http://issuu.com/adbusters/docs/adbusters_99_the-big-ideas-of-2012_preview">Adbusters</a>. Amazing!</span></li><li><span class="Apple-style-span">I shot thirteen shows over five weeks for Ars Nova's ANT Fest. I've seen the work of Japanese photographer Appuru Pai pop up on several blogs over the last week - and for good reason. Her series of long-exposure photographs taken on the Yurikamome train line are stunning and oh-so-futuristic. I've long been a fan of photographs that incorporate motion blur and have my own <a href="http://mariellesolan.com/section/70095_In_Transit.html">series of photos</a> taken from moving vehicles. I've neglected this here blog for over a month. Sorry! The main reason for the hiatus is that I've been making some big adjustments in the ol' life/career plan. Remember that <a href="http://mariellesolan.blogspot.com/2011/05/28-before-28-list.html">2</a><a href="http://mariellesolan.blogspot.com/2011/05/28-before-28-list.html">8 before 28</a> list I made? Well I'm happy to report I'm making progress with #1 on the list. I left my full-time job on June 30 and two weeks ago started interning at <a href="http://newyork.timeout.com/">TimeOut NY Magazine</a> in the photo dept. It's been a lot of fun so far and I'm going to learn a lot. All of her series are compelling, but I kept thinking about this particular one while on a recent long road trip to Ohio.<br /><br />From her artist statement: <span style="font-style: italic;">Beginning with the government's failed response to the flooding of New Orleans in 2005, the American people suffered through a series of devastating corruptions of their traditional structures of support. Stranded is a meditation on the despondence of the American psyche as this collapse of certainty left the country stuck in an unfamiliar space between distress and relief. In this series the car serves as both figurate symbol of American destiny and a literal representation of the personal breakdowns on the road to that promise. It was wonderful to be back in a place that I love and to spend time with my sister, who flew in from Austin, and catch up with friends and professors I haven't seen for several years. (Oberlin is also the place I met and fell in love with my husband Craig, so I had rosy goggles on for pretty much everything about the place, from the unidentifiable body odor + popcorn + wood furniture smell of the dorms to the 1.5hr wait in line at the town's brunch spot).<br /><br />During the long car ride out to Ohio, 7+ hours in, at around 12am, in an effort to keep me from falling asleep at the wheel, my friends and I started reflecting on the last five years. How have we changed since college? What's stayed the same? What were our goals leaving college and how have we met them or altered them? What do we see as our strengths now that we didn't see then? What do we value in others now that we didn't back then? </span><span style="font-size:85%;">Where do we want to be in another five years?</span><span style="font-size:85%;"> These questions became the running theme of the weekend for me and though I was delighted to just be back in a place for which I have endless faunts of nostalgia and fondness, I also wanted to make the 10+ hour pilgrimage worth it in a deeper way.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:85%;">During the reunion I got to see my old photography professor <a href="http://mariellesolan.blogspot.com/2011/04/photographer-inspiration-pipo-nguyen.html">Pipo Nguyen-Duy, </a>always a treat. A bunch of us old photo students were catching up in his studio, talking about our lives and current pursuits, and he said something that resonated with me. Basically he said, "Your twenties are about figuring out what you <span style="font-weight: bold;">don't</span> like, your thirties are about figuring out what you<span style="font-weight: bold;"> do</span> like, and your forties are for actually doing what you like." A light bulb moment. </span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><br />Thinking back on the last five years I'd been feeling like "Ack! Five years have gone by and what have I got to show for it? What have I been doing with myself??", which was mostly in regards to my career. I've tried a bunch of different jobs across various areas of interest since I graduated -- I interned at a Chelsea art gallery (the highlight being when Steve Martin came in and we all pretended not to notice), worked for Broadway theaters doing production management (ordering hardware and tracking invoices all day makes you appreciate Chekhov all the more), and most recently non-profit administration for Jewish schools in Tribeca (I love a good latke, but Talmudic scholar I am not), all the while squeezing art and photography into the sidelines of my life. Although these jobs have skirted my interests, they have not truly fulfilled my passions. My work decisions have helped me have a secure and steady income for the last five years, but I haven't let myself take a big risk and say, "I'm going for it!", be it with acting or photography. Which is why I'm very happy that I've made the decision in the past month to leave my current job and start focusing on my photography career. Am I scared of relying on a scatter shot freelance income? Definitely. Do I know I have a long way to go before I'll feel fully confident in my skills and artistic vision? Yup! But in another five years I want to be able to say "I'm a photographer" or "I'm an artist" when someone asks me what I do and feel proud of my work.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:85%;">Which brings me to the photo above. This photo was an early shot from <a href="http://mariellesolan.com/section/21223_Playthings.html">this series</a>, which ultimately got scrapped from it. My professors and peers weren't crazy about it and I remember my pride being quite hurt during the critique. But I took their advice and the series became better for it. I had asked an acquaintance, Clare McNulty, to be my model and at the time of the shoot we didn't know each other that well -- it was the first time we ever hung out one-on-one. Flash forward six years later and Clare is one of my closest friends - she was a bridesmaid at my wedding and even mentioned doing the shoot together in her wedding speech. Though the shots from that day ended up on the scrap heap, what grew from the experience is what matters.<br /><br />I'm so lucky to have an amazing husband, the best and most loving family imaginable, and friends that inspire me and always make me smile. I try to start every day in grateful meditation for all the love and blessings in my life, which is something I never would have thought to do during college.<br /><br />So, here's what I've learned in the last five years. "Success" is a relative term - trying and failing and trying again is a necessity for growth. They are mysterious, slightly unnerving and definitely compelling.<br /><br />I especially enjoy his On the Surface series. He uses subtle digital manipulation to create distorted mirror images of his subjects. They lead me to wonder which is the "real" subject. The images speak to people's inner lives and how we can perceive ourselves in ways that differ from our exterior. He lived for two years with this community, joining them in their fishing and logging work, gaining an understanding of the people and their connection to the land/water. Instead of capturing the community in straightforward documentary style, he instead employed tilt-shift to create dream-like, poetic images that break the </span><span style="font-size:85%;">definitions of what "photojournalism" vs "fine art" photography should look like. Revisiting her work recently, I was struck by how much can change physically and emotionally in the life of a young adult in just a few short years. In it, Stern narrates while her guitar provides sound effects for a distorted electro-fairytale. Using a structure not unlike "Peter and the Wolf", she leads the listener layer-by-layer into an aural landscape that is also extremely visual.<br /><br />She references Glenn Gould's "Solitude Trilogy" three times in the lyrics in the lines "around you is a solitude trilogy", "you start to think of ideas of the north" and "in walk the latecomers". </span><span style="font-size:85%;">I'd never heard the piece before, a clip is below. </span><span style="font-size:85%;">I like all of these lines because they are allusions to the Gould piece but if you've never heard of it before, it doesn't matter. I could picture the line "around you is a solitude trilogy" as being three characters (perhaps the three Fates from Greek mythology), circling the protagonist. The latecomers are also unique characters, who "back shuffle forwards" into the room.<br /><br /><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3MeTImOtqYc" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="371" width="600"></iframe><br /><br />Another group of characters who enter the world are the "self-eaters". I think the figures in the "Self-Eaters" series of paintings by Dana Schutz fit into the world of the song aptly. The world is dark and irreverent (as all good fantasy worlds are), but also sparkling and full of possibility. Cars were suspended from big hooks, submerged in the water and sent via pulley through the ocean in an assembly line. I was a little concerned about how we'd all be able to breathe through such an ordeal, but I figured we'd all get supplied with oxygen tanks and scuba gear. It was a bit of a let down but also a relief when I found out that an underwater tunnel was just like a regular tunnel. </span><span style="font-size:85%;">Children's minds have this capability to fill in the gaps when there's not already a clear picture about how something/someone will be in reality, regardless of how absurd the imagined outcome is.</span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;">The video above was illustrated by family friend Flash Rosenberg (a recent Guggenheim Fellow!) as part of the "Conversation Portrait" series done through the NYPL. The results are stunning, in my mind. I love how each body of water affects a print in a different way and the variety of colors, shapes and textures that "surface" once the print has been soaked. It makes me wonder what the different chemical compositions of the lakes could be since they have such different results on the prints.<br /><br />In the age of shooting digitally, I often forget that the print itself is part of the process/final outcome of a photograph. More often than not my photos are "finished" once I've touched up and exported from Light Room. (Personally I haven't stepped into a darkroom in over 5 years!). But the print/paper can be an incredibly versatile and creative medium. I am reminded of a project one of my classmates did back in Oberlin. She took a box of photo paper to a firing range and shot the paper through with bullets. The light that leaked through the bullet holes created beautiful abstract black and white patterns once the paper had been developed in photo chemicals. But Jon Rafman carefully combed through a countless number of these Street View images to find ones that stand out. The images he's found are surprising, funny, unnerving, intimate, mundane - the moments captured run the gamut of human experiences and emotions. Crimes/arrests, couples embracing, celebrations, people flipping the bird or mooning the camera, isolated individuals against vast landscapes - these have all been documented by a neutral/mechanical gaze yet they are full of humanity and poetry.<br /><br />From his artist statement: <span style="font-style: italic;">In Street View photography, Google cars, mounted with nine cameras, roam the earth recording automatically whatever comes within their purview. The detached gaze of their cameras witness</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> but do not act in history. Street View photography, artless and indifferent, without human intention,</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">ascribes no particular significance to any event or person. Chinese artist Liu Bolin meticulously paints his whole body to disappear into his surroundings. </span></span><span style="font-family:georgia;font-size:85%;">Aside from the fact that the pieces are really cool, the message is also quite powerful. The series was inspired by his displacement in 2005 after the government bulldozed the area of Beijing where he and many other artists were living. So I didn't realize until recently that there is a sizable population of young (mostly female) photographers on flickr who spend a lot of time floating/levitating (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lissyl/4566287447/">1</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ndybisz/3090007718/in/set-72157607765596396/">2</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/schloo/5408388953/">3</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/brookeshaden/5654560112/">4</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/4824806177/">5</a>) , getting rained on by cotton clouds (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lissyl/5509768934/">1</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/4393326150/">2</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/schloo/4790759801/">3</a>), engaging with poisonous apples (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/brookeshaden/5331024479/">1</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/2777890327/in/set-72157606756695552">2</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/alex-stoddard/5391502745/">3</a>), dressing in clown make-up (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lissyl/4293428062/in/photostream">1</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/2842998735/in/set-72157604736073126">2, </a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lauracammarata/2906798749/in/set-72157607408231184">3</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ktlindsay/2896276418/in/set-72157601586310607">4</a>) and in general exploring the fantasy/fairy-tale genre (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/schloo/5009478969/">1</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lissyl/4413930753/in/set-72157623561572437/">2</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie_hardy/sets/72157606756695552/with/2777890327/">3</a>), often through the medium of self-portraiture. </span><span style="font-size:85%;">Some of these photographers are extremely popular in the flickr community and have even<a href="http://ktlindsay.blogspot.com/2009/02/visual-plagiarism-strange-case-of-rosie.html"> incited a plagiarism controvers</a><a href="http://ktlindsay.blogspot.com/2009/02/visual-plagiarism-strange-case-of-rosie.html">y</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/ndybisz/">published books</a> and <a href="http://brookeshaden.com/">teach levitation workshops</a>. </span><span style="font-size:85%;"> Given our culture's obsession with all things Fantasy (hello Twilight), it makes sense that these photographers have gained attention - </span><span style="font-size:85%;">I see these photos as falling somewhere in the spectrum of fashion (<a href="http://www.eugeniorecuenco.com/">especially Eugenio Recuenco</a>)</span><span style="font-size:85%;">, advertising, performance self-portraits (<a href="http://www.hannahwilke.com/id5.html">Hannah Wilke</a>, Cindy Sherman), with maybe a dash of the Pre-Raphaelites. </span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><br />When I was a teenager I was very much into painting/drawing fantasy scenes. I didn't pick up my first camera until I was 17 and I learned on film/analogue, not Photoshop. (I actually didn't do any digital photography until I graduated from college). Part of me is envious that these young artists have so many tools at their fingertips. The other part of me thinks - learn the basics first before you start trying to get fancy! Many of these photographers are indeed talented and imaginative (I enjoy Anka Zhuravleva's photos especially) and I applaud them for their savvy gaining attention and followers in this overly-saturated digital photography age. However, I can't help but think that much of this work is too artifice-driven, overtly symbolic and angsty - wearing its emotion and message on its sleeve. The interviews with graphic designers and typographers are entertaining and illuminate the split in the graphic design world about whether Helvetica is a masterpiece or opiate of the masses. (I especially enjoyed <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F691weEVpwc">Erik Spiekermann,</a></span><span style="font-size:85%;"> a passionate typo-maniac). I never realized a font could incite so much controversy! But his most recent series of photographs is a fascinating experiment in group portraiture. Why have these people come together for a picture? At what point is someone no longer a stranger? These images explore our most basic understanding of trust and fear: the fragility, possibility, and psychology of human interactions. </span><a href="http://www.renaldi.com/press/index.html">Read more.</a><br /></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br />I came across the series Touching Strangers by Richard <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Renaldi</span> a little while ago and was inspired to try approaching strangers myself and ask to take their portraits (<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/Marielle.Solan/2010_05_30_AstoriaParkBWJpegs#">see Astoria Park portraits here</a>). Up until that point I'd taken a more elusive stance when photographing strangers, preferring to be an unknown/unseen observer. Just approaching someone I didn't know and asking to take their picture was challenging enough -- <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Renaldi</span> takes it one step further by asking two or more strangers to pose together and touch. His subjects often hold hands, draw their heads together, sometimes even touch thighs and more intimate body parts. Living in New York, we are surrounded by strangers all the time, but we so often ignore each other. There are rules (</span><span style="font-size:85%;">no eye contact on the subway! ignore the person peeing/busking/screaming!)</span><span style="font-size:85%;"> and people are so often immersed in smart phones/ <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">ipod</span> bubbles -- it's truly refreshing to see a photographer working against this.
